Using a ‘dying patient’ scenario to nurture compassionate care
Digital Edition: Using a ‘dying patient’ scenario to nurture compassionate care
Taking part in a simulation helped students confront the challenges involved in end-of-life care.
Abstract
Teaching about end-of-life care to undergraduate nursing students is often limited to classroom lectures, though subjects of death and grief elicit stress and anxiety in students. The ‘dying patient’ simulation scenario was piloted with senior nursing students to teach about compassionate communication at the end of life. Nursing faculty need to invest more into teaching palliative care competencies.
